A Course in Miracles
went through some editing before it was published.
Since this is not copyrighted material (court's 2004 decision is
finalized), this original manuscript is now available for you to study.
I recommend this for ACIM students and scholars and anybody whose heart
and mind has been touched by A Course in Miracles.
This is a copy of the original typing of the Text, Workbook, and Manual by Bill
Thetford or the first re-typing by Helen Schucman -- can't know for sure -- but
it is clearly one of the very first drafts. It is earlier than the "Hugh Lynn
Casey Version" and has all three books! It has Helen's handwritten editing notes
in the margins and about 60 pages of personal messages meant (apparently??) just
for Helen and Bill -- but so powerful that some ended up in the published Course....it's
the raw and complete teaching before editing was done years later for publishing.
1800 pages, typed, double-spaced. For me, it has been helpful and clarifying to
see the actual wording and context of some of the most familiar parts of the Course.
It's also validating and touching to read some of Helen's personal questions to
the Author and His personal answers, embedded in the scribing. Wow! is an understatement.
Approximately ~25% of the first five chapters was removed from the
published version and completely omitted, other portions were moved
around. Discussions of sex were deleted, death thoughts, basic psychology
and famous psychologists, Cayce, a wonderful discussion on "The Possession
Fallacy," and many other subjects that were decided not to be appropriate
for the public edition. Several terms were changed to more "common"
terms, for example, in many places "Holy Spirit" was actually "Spiritual
Eye." There is a simple and extremely well described explanation why
the very term "forgiveness" was chosen to be re-defined!!! Plus, all
throughout the 3 sections there is Jesus' emphasis via selective word
capitalization that brings CLARITY to the phrasing.
It brought tears to my eyes (12-year ACIM student) seeing the original
words, benefitting from the clarifications, the extra information that
was channeled, the very, very personal and graceful nature of the Author
comes through.
Why not free? My local national chain copy store charges 6 cents per side for
two-sided copying and even with 1800 pages copied two per side and two-sided,
this manuscript is still two inches thick, five pounds, and costs about $60 to
reproduce and bind in low quantities. In final form, it is about the size of a
large phone book. The Urtext was photocopied and passed around many times many
years ago. The ones available here are digitally printed from a scan (not copied)
so there is no further degredation and I have them professionally bound with plastic
covers.
